Sambar deer is a middle-size deer. Its coat is dark-brown in color. The color of the lower part of its body is lighter in color. Only male hog deer has horn. There are 3 tines in each side of horn. It sheds its horn every year. Newborn has white marking spots on its body and these spots will disappear when it grows up. There is tear in its eyes all the time. It is one of the most beautiful deer.
It is found in India, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. In Thailand, it can be found in Northern part and Northeastern part, not in Southern part.
It eats leafs, grasses, and fruits.
It stays in herd and lives in sparse forests, grassland forests, and lowland area near water banks. It normally makes a living since twilight until early morning. It is a watch-over animal and alert all the time. Male is fierce during breeding season.
Endangered
It is mature and ready for mating at the age of 2 years. Its gestation period is around 8 months. One litter contains only one young.
Its height is around 140 – 150 centimeters.
