Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)

Interesting :

It has a big round body and very wide mouth. It is clumsy. It lower canine is bowed and long, which is its weapon. Its skin is thick and shields by mucus. It has no hair on the body but there is hair around its mouth and near tail tip. Its sweat is in red mucus, which is look like blood.

Habitat :

It is found in Africa, Uganda, Northern part of Zululand, Transvaal, Kenya, and Senegal.

Food :

It eats grasses, water plants, fruits, and vegetations.

Behavior :

It stays in herd. It likes to stay in water during daytime and on ground during nighttime for eating. It can bear cold quite well. It likes to reside in still water or slow flow water. It is normally not fierce. During breeding season, male is fierce and fight for female. It is also fierce when it is frightened or wounded. Mother with young baby is very fierce. It can dive very well. It is also able to walk underneath water.

It can live up to 40 – 45 years.

Reproductive :

Gestation period is 227 – 240 days. One litter contains only one young. Young sucks mother milk in water. It weans at the age of 4 – 8 months.
